November 2012 - Welcome to this edition of our eNews

NewSpec was delighted to welcome Michael Ventura to the team in August. Michael has ten years of experience in the design, construction and application of spectroscopy, microscopy and laser systems. He has extensive experience in the use of Spectra Physics products including Mai Tai, Tsunami and Spitfire with application to multi-photon laser scanning microscopy and spectroscopy.

Michael will be based in Melbourne and takes over much of the responsibility for Spectra Physics laser sales from Graeme, as well as just being out-and-about in Melbourne a lot more than we have been able to be in the past.

Our ramp-up with all things Hitachi continues, and it has been a very exciting start. Thank you to all those people that have met with us to discuss past, current and future requirements….and on the whole expressing so much excitement that the Hitachi High-Tech product line is to be backed by a much bigger team in Australasia from now on.

High Compliance Laser Diode Driver
Ideal for controlling quantum cascade laser diodes
Newport's ILX Lightwave LDX-3232 High Compliance Laser Diode Driver is the industry's only laser diode driver specifically developed for controlling high compliance voltage devices such as quantum cascade laser diodes. Careful attention to design allows these drivers to deliver up to 4 A of low noise current at up to 15 V with a stability of better than 20 ppm. This performance is critical for development of room temperature quantum cascade lasers and spectroscopic applications using quantum cascade lasers. The LDX-3232 includes multiple levels of laser protection to safe guard expensive quantum cascade lasers during operation. Protection features include: slow start circuit, floating output, AC transient suppression, independent current limits, and intermittent contact protection.
In addition to precision current control, the LDX-3232 is loaded with standard features such as dual current ranges, constant power control, fine/coarse set point control, laser current and voltage measurement, photodiode current display modes, forward voltage adjustment and measurement, and an external modulation input.

Precision Temperature Controllers
Newport's ILX Lightwave LDT-5910C and LDT-5940C Thermoelectric Temperature Controllers combine precision temperature control with an intuitive instrument front panel for fast, accurate temperature control of laser diodes and other optoelectronic components.
The LDT-5910C and LDT-5940C easily control the temperature of your laser diode in one of three modes: (1) Constant Temperature, (2) Constant Sensor or (3) Constant Current. Temperature stability of <+/-0.003 °C ensures device performance and highly reliable test measurements. With <+/-0.003 °C stability, the controllers are ideal for R&D applications, eliminating mode hopping and significantly reducing noise due to temperature fluctuations. The LDT-5910C and LDT-5940C include IEEE 488.1 GPIB and USB 2.0 computer interfaces for easy integration into any R&D or manufacturing application.

Koheras Narrow Linewidth Low Noise Fibre Lasers
The Koheras™ fibre lasers are ultra-low noise sources with longitudinal single mode and single frequency operation. The lasers are based on a DFB design ensuring robust and reliable operation, and are delivered as fully integrated systems for the industry and scientific community. They offer an unprecedented low phase and intensity noise level, very high stability and mode-hop free inherent single frequency output - both under stable and uneven environmental conditions. Furthermore, shot noise limited solutions are available for applications demanding a very low intensity noise level.
Koheras fibre lasers are available within a wide range of wavelengths in the 1 and 1.5 micron wavelength range, and with output power levels from 10 mW to 15 W.

Argos High Power Optical Parametric Oscillators
With up to 25 W of output power, the Argos optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) generate the highest power output of any OPO on the market. The output is single mode with narrow linewidth and unmatched frequency stability. Moreover, the system is tuneable from 1.4 to 4.6 µm, making the Argos OPOs ideal for a wide range of applications such as spectroscopy, gas sensing and laser cooling. A limited amount of overlap in the wavelength coverage between Argos' four modules is provided by temperature variation of the nonlinear crystal.

New Visible range OPOs
With the new visible Argos OPOs you can now reach wavelengths below 1 µm. Get Watt-level output anywhere from below 600 to 900 nm and go even lower with SFG and FHG stages. As with all the Argos systems they are robust with a monolithic cavity pumped by a fibre laser. It operates at room temperature with only air-cooling. The new visible Argos OPOs are ideally suited for applications including:
Laser cooling and trapping, Optical lattice and tweezers, Rydberg atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC)

AFM Mode with Automatic Image Optimisation
Bruker's ScanAsyst™ atomic force microscopy imaging mode is the world's first image-optimisation scan mode for AFM microscopes. This patent-pending innovation utilises intelligent algorithms to automatically and continuously monitor image quality, and to make the appropriate parameter adjustments. This frees researchers from the complex and tedious task of adjusting set points, feedback gains, and scan rates, making imaging as easy as simply selecting a scan area and scan size for almost any sample in either air or fluid.

Surface Potential (Kelvin Probe) AFM Accessory
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) maps electrostatic potential at sample surfaces to provide information about electronic structure, doping level variations, trapped charges, and chemical identity in applications ranging from organic photovoltaics research to silicon and wide bandgap semiconductor characterisation. Bruker's new PeakForce KPFM™ module (compatible with the latest generation Bruker SPM's) combines the complete set of KPFM detection mechanisms, including amplitude and frequency modulation, with both TappingMode™ and PeakForce Tapping™ to provide directly correlated quantitative nanomechanical data. The result is improved sensitivity of the frequency-modulation measurements and immunity to artefacts from mechanical crosstalk. In addition, PeakForce KPFM provides a completely automated parameter setup with ScanAsyst®. The result is a significant improvement in quantitative surface potential data for materials research as well as semiconductor applications.

IM4000 Ion Milling System
The new Hitachi IM4000 Ar ion cross section and sample surface polisher makes two milling configurations available in a single instrument. While previously two separate systems were needed to perform both, cross section polishing (E-3500) and wide-area sample surface fine polishing (IM3000), Hitachi's new IM4000 now allows running both applications within the same machine. The new Ar ion gun design of the IM4000 offers the highest milling speed (300 um/h for Si) at just 6 keV ion energy. This means, besides a higher throughput, there is less thermal load on your sample compared to other systems requiring higher ion energies for achieving the same sputter rate.
