July 2015

Hi Folks,

As a result of many requests, this is our first “LaserCheck email”. Put simply…..every six months we plan to send an email as a prompt to our customers/users to do two things:

1.   Check the basic operation of your laser and chiller to keep it in top shape, and

2.   If you have seen any strange or unusual behaviour from your laser, no matter how insignificant, PLEASE..... call us!

We have sent this initial email to everyone we have listed that has purchased or manages the following systems: Millennia XX, Tsunami XX, Mai Tai XX, InSight XX, Empower XX, femtoLasers, HighQ, LAB/PRO/INDI YAG lasers.

These lasers mostly operate with chillers, and all have their own unique health checks.
If you are NOT SURE what is needed, then maybe this email is a good prompt to get in touch with Andrew Gibson-White and check what we would like you to do.

If you would like to be removed from this list, or have someone else in your lab added, please contact us .

Mai Tai Laser

MAI TAI CHECKS
Things to check on your Mai Tai

- Check humidity (replace purge filter when humidity >10%)
- Clean the air filter on the front of the power supply and chiller
- Check coolant (replace every 6 months), NEVER use de-ionised water
- Replace coolant particulate filter (every 6 months)
- Check chiller set temperature (should be 21ºC)

NOTE: If you are not going to use the laser for a prolonged period please contact us for instructions on how to store the laser as the laser should normally always be left powered. Whenever power is applied to the laser, the chiller should also be on.

InSight DS+ Laser

INSIGHT CHECKS
Things to check on your InSight DS

- Check humidity (replace purge filter when humidity >5%) or when the purge filter turns pink
- Clean the air filter on the front of the chiller
- Check coolant (replace Nalco every 6 months). Please use only full strength Nalco. NEVER use de-ionised water in your chiller

Millennia eV Laser

MILLENNIA CHECKS
Things to check on your Millennia

- Clean the air filter on the front of the chiller (or power supply and chiller for Millennia Classic/Prime etc)
- Check coolant. Please use only steam distilled water. NEVER use de-ionised water in your chiller
- Replace coolant particulate filter (every 6 months)
- Check chiller set temperature (should be 20ºC)

NOTE: If you are not going to use the laser for a prolonged period please contact us for instructions on how to store the laser as the laser should normally always be left powered. Whenever power is applied to the laser, the chiller should also be on.

Quanta-Ray Laser

QUANTA-RAY CHECKS
Things to check on your Quanta-Ray

- Check burn pattern (nice round burn with no signs of clipping / hot spots or diffraction rings). Please contact us if you need more burn paper or a new IR Card.
- How is the purge filter? Still blue?
- Check coolant levels. The DI filter and particulate filter should be replaced yearly. Please only use STEAM DISTILLED water for the internal reservoir (NEVER use de-ionised water)
- How is your nitrogen bottle or nitrogen generator? Still good flow? Should be 0.7 scfh for operation and 0.2 scfh for standby
- Facility water should be around 3.8 litres per minute for a 10 Hz system
- Are your optics dust free? Do you need more lens tissue, acetone or methanol?

NOTE: If you are not going to use the laser for a prolonged period please contact us for instructions on how to store the laser as the laser should normally always be left powered. This keeps the harmonic crystals warm and dry. You should also circulate the water through the system for 30 minutes a week when not in use.

Sirah Dye Laser

SIRAH DYE LASER CHECKS
Things to check on your Sirah Dye Laser

- Check for dust on pump optics and dye cells
- Check for diffraction spots in the beam profile
- Check for burns or spots on optics and dye cells
- Check for any sign of leaks around dye cells
- Check condition of the laser dye. If it is discoloured or there are particles in the dye it needs to be replaced
- Check condition of dye filters in circulators

REMEMBER: When switching to a shorter wavelength dye, i.e. from a dye emitting in the red spectral region (e.g. Rhodamine, DCM, Pyridine) to a dye emitting in the blue region (e.g. Coumarin, Exalite) thorough cleaning of the dye circulator system is absolutely necessary since the residue of the previous dye may absorb strongly at the laser wavelength of the new dye.

Spitfire ACE Amplifier

SPITFIRE CHECKS
Things to check on your Spitfire Amplifier

- Check humidity on your Mai Tai (replace purge filter when humidity >10%) or when the purge filter turns pink
- Check the desiccant in the TCU. Is it pink? Does the active faults screen show a humidity error?
- Clean the air filter on the front of the Empower/Mai Tai and both chillers
- Check coolant (replace Nalco every 6 months). Please use only full strength Nalco. NEVER use de-ionised water in your chiller
- Replace coolant particulate filter (every 6 months). If you operate a Merlin 33 chiller on your Empower, you require both a 5 micron AND a 1 micron filter
- Check chiller set temperature (should be 21ºC for Mai Tai and individual temp for your Empower)
- How is the beam profile. Nice and round with no signs of clipping?
- Does the pulse train look correct. If not, please let us know
- How are the optics? Any dust or oily marks on the mirrors and lenses? Do you need replacement lens tissue or methanol?

NOTE: If you are not going to use the laser for a prolonged period please contact us for instructions on how to store the laser as the laser should normally always be left powered. Whenever power is applied to the laser, the chiller should also be on.
