February 2013 - Welcome to this edition of our eNews

We wish everyone a belated Seasons Greetings, and a wonderful New Year, somehow between an insanely busy end-of-year, combined with being stuck in a Hurricane in the US, the end of year just got away from us, and all of those December newsletter plans fell in a hole. We have many great new things happening at NewSpec, a few of the highlights are:

– Avantes appoint NewSpec as their new Australasian Distributor (for anyone looking for a really serious alternative to Ocean Optics).

– NewSpec's Laser Safety Officer Andrew Gibson-White offers an overview on Laser Safety eyewear Standards in Australia. NewSpec now offer lab fit outs and advice utilising products from Kentek, Univet, nmlaser and Newport.

– NewSpec now has for hire a fantastic Table Hoist and Transport system for the installation of new optical tables.

– Training continued with Andrew Gibson-White travelling to Hitachi for his first official service training, and Graeme Jones, Michael Ventura and Inderpreet Gill travelling to the US for Hitachi and Spectra Physics training.

Update on Laser safety NewSpec's Laser Safety Officer
In December 2011 new Australian and New Zealand standards were released relating to lasers and broadband sources (AS/NZS IEC 60825.1:2011, AS/NZS IEC 60825.14:2011).

While most laser users have been well aware of the changes to the standards what I've found while providing laser safety equipment to the Australian and New Zealand communities is that the standards relating to the requirements for laser safety eyewear have been largely overlooked by laser users – lots of users are under the misconception that when determining laser safety eyewear you simply have to determine if the filter had an appropriate optical density (OD) to reduce the laser radiation below the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) level for the wavelength of the laser being used.

However, this approach does not take into account the damage threshold of the filter material and frame. I believe some reasons for this misconception are;
- Many people incorrectly refer to the standards in the USA which only require determination of OD ratings.
- The old AS/NZS 2211.1:2004 standard only mentions calculating OD of eyewear even though an Australian standard (1337.4:2004) existed that actually required the power/energy density of the laser radiation and the damage threshold of the material to be taken into account.

The new AS/NZS IEC 60825.14:2011 in section 8.4.5.1 now points people in the direction of EN207 and EN208 which is what our 1337.4:2011 and 1337.5:2011 are derived from.

The new 1337.4:2011 and 1337.5:2011 have slightly different scale numbers than the 2004 standard, so the ratings are now given as "LB " ratings rather than "L" ratings. The new standards also have different correction values for glass and plastic eyewear meaning that the required ratings for a given situation can be different depending on if you are using glass or polycarbonate laser safety eyewear.

At NewSpec we are committed to ensuring our customers have the most appropriate eyewear that is compliant with the current Australian and New Zealand standards.

We provide laser safety eyewear from leading manufacturers (Newport / Univet) and are always happy to discuss your specific needs to help you determine the correct required ratings for your laser safety eyewear. We can also assist with your other laser safety equipment needs such as laser viewing aids, interlock systems and laser blocking curtains.

We look forward to working with you to provide you with all your laser and laser safety equipment needs.

NEW Optical Table Hoist and Transport System
NewSpec can now provide an Optical Table Hoist and Transport system that is quick and easy to use and is a lot safer than using the normal collection of standard hoists, gantries, and dollies that are required to install large optical tables.

The table hoist and transport system sandwiches the optical table in holding brackets that also allows for safe rotation of the optical table top thru 90 degrees to allow it to fit through tight spaces such as doorways and narrow corridors.

The system can be used with optical tables up to a maximum width of 1.5 m x 4.8 m length with thickness up to 60 cm. It also has a manual winch to lift the optical table to the desired height making lowering onto table legs or lifting off table legs a breeze.

Please contact us if you would like to hire this equipment for your next table installation or move.

254-TPI Adjustment Screws
The AJS254-0.5H-NL Adjustment Screw has precision cut threads for exceptionally smooth adjustment and higher sensitivity than standard micrometers. The AJS254-0.5H-NL offers 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) precision travel obtained with hex-head adjustment, ideal for use with Newport optical mounts, stages, and most micrometer-compatible components. With sub-micron sensitivity, they are a cost-effective alternative to micrometers where position readout is not required. High-precision 254-TPI, cut stainless steel threads are mated with the collet and a proprietary lubricant which reduces the elastic effect allowing exceptionally accurate movement. The standard 0.375 in. (9.5 mm) diameter collet is threaded with a nut for mounting to optical mounts and stages. KD.37 and KD.75 stainless steel knobs are available as an accessory.

Optical Delay Line Mirror Mount
The 9848 Optical Delay Line Mirror Mount is an easy-to-use, versatile fixture for creating an optical delay line. It has two orthogonal surfaces for mounting standard mirrors, allowing an input optical beam to be reflected back, parallel to itself. This low-cost mount simplifies the assembly of an optical delay line by virtually eliminating the time-consuming task of mirror alignment, owing to the precision orthogonal surfaces (30 arc sec., identifiable by the hatched pattern). Notwithstanding, the 9848 is a significantly less expensive alternative to the wavelength-bound retro reflector. It is versatile because it holds various sizes, shapes and thicknesses of mirrors and allows variable spacing between the input and output beams up to 2 in. (50 mm). Guide lines set at 0.5 in. (12.7 mm) increments are provided to assist in setting beam spacing. The 9848 can be mounted directly to a translation stage via a centralised hole counterbored for 1/4-20 (M6) cap head screws or pedestal-post mounted on a SR- or PS-series post.

Broadband Fibres
For the first time fibre optic cables can be used from 250 to 2500 nm. Available directly, this gives users the broad range of two fibres combined into one, without any loss of signal. Until now, users of fibre optic cables had to choose between a fibre for lower wavelength ranges and those for the higher ranges. Now, Avantes introduces the broadband fibre immediately eliminating this difficult choice and keeping the number or required fibres minimized.
