Univet Laser Safety Eyewear

Having the knowledge as well as the correct equipment to provide a safe working environment is critical for any workplace that involves the use of lasers.

This edition of Laser Safety Focus features laser safety eyewear and how to select the correct eyewear for your application that will be compliant with the Australian and New Zealand standards AS/NZS 1337.4:2011 (full protection) or AS/NZS 1337.5:2011 (alignment eyewear).

Laser safety matters and we are laser people here to help laser people work safety, so whatever your laser safety questions and equipment needs please contact the NewSpec team.

Why not just use OD values?

Univet Laser Safety Eyewear
One of the most common questions we receive about laser safety eyewear is "what are EN207 (AS/NZS 1337.4) ratings and why can't you just use OD values?"

The simple answer is that while OD values are important, as it tells you how much attenuation the eyewear will theoretically provide, the theoretical attenuation means nothing if the eyewear doesn't have the ability to withstand a direct hit from the laser and provide sufficient protection to the person wearing the eyewear.

The Australian and New Zealand standards for eyewear are a direct copy of the European standards EN207/EN208 and take into account not only the required attenuation but also the ability of the eyewear to withstand the power/energy density of the laser beam for 5 seconds or 50 pulses (in the case of full protection eyewear).

Alignment Eyewear

Alignment Eyewear

NEED TO SEE THE BEAM?

In situations where the beam needs to be seen but the laser powers being used are too hazardous to be worked with alignment eyewear should be used. The Australian and New Zealand standard for alignment eyewear is AS/NZS 1337.5 (EN208) and sets out the required ratings to reduce the visible laser radiation (from 400 to 700 nm) down below that of a Class 2 laser product (<1 mW for a cw laser). Alignment eyewear relies on the aversion response (blink reflex) to protect the wearer of the eyewear. Alignment eyewear is only applicable to visible lasers.
